Private School Admissions
The 7 plus exam (7+ exam) refers to an entrance exam taken by students who are about to enter Year 3 (or Grade 2) of primary school in the UK. It is generally administered to students who are 6 or 7 years old, hence the name “7 plus exam.”
The 7 plus exam is used by many independent schools in the UK as part of their admissions process. The exam may include assessments in subjects such as English, maths, and reasoning, and is designed to test students’ problem-solving abilities, logic and reasoning skills, and evidence of creative thinking.

The 8 plus exam (8+ exam) refers to an entrance exam taken by students who are about to enter Year 4 of primary school in the UK. It is generally administered to students who are 7 or 8 years old, hence the name “8 plus exam.”
Some schools that offer the 7 plus exam (7+ exam) also hold the 8 plus exam (8+ exam), and students can apply for either. The content of the 8+ exam is similar to that of the 7+ exam, often including assessments in subjects such as English, maths, and reasoning, followed by an official interview.
The 11 plus exam (11+ exam) is an entrance exam taken by students who are about to enter Year 7 (or Grade 6) of secondary school in some regions of the UK, particularly in England. The exam is generally taken by students who are 10 or 11 years old.
The 11 plus exam (11+ exam) is used by some selective schools, particularly grammar schools, as part of their admissions process. The exam may include assessments in subjects such as English, maths, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning. The content and format of the 11 plus exam (11+ exam) can vary depending on the school or organization administering it.
The 13 plus exam (13+ exam) is an entrance exam taken by students who are about to enter Year 9 (or Grade 8) of secondary school in some regions of the UK. It is generally taken by students who are 12 or 13 years old.
Similar to the 11 plus (11+ exam), the 13 plus exam (13+ exam) is used by some selective schools, particularly independent schools, as part of their admissions process. The exam may include assessments in subjects such as English, maths, science, and humanities. The content and format of the 13 plus exam (13+ exam) can vary depending on the school or organization administering it.
The 16 plus exam (or 16+ exam) is not a standardized entrance exam like the 7 plus exam (7+ exam), 11 plus exam (11+ exam), or 13 plus exam (13+ exam). Instead, at age 16, students in the UK typically take a set of exams known as GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education), which are taken at the end of Year 11 (or Grade 10).
After completing their GCSEs, students have several options for further education or training, including staying on at their current school for Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13), attending a college or further education institution, or pursuing an apprenticeship.
